Cristiano Ronaldo has officially retired from the World Cup, after his Portugal team was eliminated by Spain with a 1-0 defeat in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.

The match was a highly competitive one with both teams creating several chances, but goals were lacking for a long time. Ronaldo had a crucial chance in the first half, but his effort was saved by Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón.

In the 91st minute, Spain got the winning goal through Mikel Merino, who scored after receiving a clean pass from Ferran Torres, giving his team a ticket to the quarter-finals.

Before the game, Ronaldo had already announced that the 2026 World Cup would be his last, so the final whistle officially ended his journey in the world’s biggest football tournament.

Spain will now advance to the quarter-finals, with Ronaldo leaving behind a great and indelible legacy in world football.
